Not possible to become a respected person all of sudden : Abdul Azeez

Information Commissioner Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakr have said that some people try to be very pious and a respected person suddenly but this won’t be possible.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of Youth Human Rights Defender Camp organized by MNDF and HRCM, Abdul Azeez said that human rights defenders should have dignity and must be well respected within the society. He said that people who do not have any respect in the society cannot be human rights defenders.
He said that however, the reality in Maldives is very different. “Someone might do so many unacceptable things in the society. Suddenly this person becomes a very pious person. Someone who is trying to defend human rights. And then that person might start talking about defending human rights. But the thing is people will not accept words coming from a person who has a dirty past. It will be difficult to accept things such a person says” said Abdul Azeez.
He said that human rights were ensured by Islam 1400 years ago. He said that most important rights include, right to live, right to work and right to justice. In addition, he said that everyone should work on self-development first and start working for the right of others after making sure that you have a clean past. He said that human rights defenders should be well mannered and must not insult other people.
Fifteen participants completed the camp. HRCM said that they will conduct more camps and train others as well. The participants were informed on how to practice and promote human rights.
