Green tax revenue has increased by 77 percent, according to the Finance Ministry.
Statistics show the government collected MVR 761.1 million in green tax as of 8 May. This is an increase of MVR 331.5 million compared to the MVR 429.6 million in the same period last year.
The Green Tax, introduced in October 2016, aims to generate funds for various environmental initiatives in the Maldives, including water and sewerage projects, waste management projects, and beach protection activities. The tax is imposed on tourist resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and liveaboards. The Green Tax charged on tourists per day has doubled from USD 3 to USD 6 in guesthouses and hotels with less than 50 rooms, while the amount increased from USD 6 to USD 12 in tourism establishments with over 50 rooms and in resorts. However, the tax is not applicable to children below two years of age.
