Maldives Customs Service seized a shipment of 400 vapes smuggled into the Maldives yesterday.
In a statement today, Customs said the vapes were discovered during an inspection of a sea freight shipment at the commercial port.
The shipment had been declared as general cargo, but further investigation revealed 100 packets containing four vapes each.
The import of vapes and e-cigarettes has been banned since 15 December last year under the Tobacco Control Act.
Customs has launched an investigation into the case.
Police also raided a location involved in the sale of vapes last night and arrested an expatriate. According to police, searches of the individual's residence and the cafe' where he worked led to the discovery of 84 vape cartridges and a sum of money believed to be from vape sales.
