Police service has been expanded to all residential islands across the Maldives, fulfilling an electoral pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The fulfillment of the pledge was announced by President Muizzu while speaking with the residents of L. Gan on Tuesday as part of his ongoing tour of Laamu Atoll.
In this regard, the President said police service has been expanded to all residential islands across Maldives with the commencement of police services in R. Rasgetheemu on Tuesday evening.
According to President Muizzu, when he assumed office on November 17, 2023, 66 inhabited islands lacked any form of police services, with these communities relying on neighbouring islands for law enforcement, a situation he described as inadequate to meet basic public safety needs.
The President detailed that only 17 islands had had dedicated police facilities at that time, posing significant challenges in delivering consistent services.
He added that his administration was working to establish police stations on 130 islands by the end of the year, ensuring that each community receives policing from its own dedicated facility.
