‘Deaths and disappearances’ commissioner Husnu Suood can’t be summoned in court and charged without the involvement prosecutors, former president Mohamed Nasheed has said.
Nasheed said in a tweet on Wednesday night that Suood can only be tried before a court of law in the Maldives if the Prosecutor General’s Office formally charges him.
Nasheed’s tweet translates to, ‘chair of the commission to investigate deaths and disappearances, Husnu Suood can only be tried in a court of law if the PG’s office and the state charges him with something’.
Suood has been summonsed to the Criminal Court for a behind-closed-doors hearing, although it was later cancelled. The court has said that they will be investigating allegations Suood made about the court bench colluding with local street gangs.
Suood is heading the‘Commission on Investigation of Murder and Enforced Disappearances’, which is investigating a total of 25 cases, which are all to be completed by April.
