Supreme Court confirmed its decision on Saturday to grant opposition intervention in the case filed by outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdulla Gayoom against the presidential elections held on September 23.
According to lawyer and Vice President of the coalition-allied Adhaalath Party, Ali Zahir, summons to attend the proceedings was sent by the Supreme Court to all respective political parties as well as to former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Zahir confirmed that the constitutional case is scheduled to begin hearings at 1300 hrs and will be attended by the attorneys representing the political parties.
After the President conceded his defeat in a public address to the people, the representing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) claimed that the case contesting the electoral results was filed due to having received numerous complaints from Yameen’s supporters. President Yameen filed the case seeking to nullify the electoral result.
Of the four party leaders, former President Maumoon and Juhmhooree Party Founder Qasim Ibrahim have recently been freed, after appealing their previous convictions. Meanwhile, President of the Adhaalath Party Sheikh Imran Abdulla is currently under house arrest while former President Mohamed Nasheed also remains abroad under political asylum.
