MDP’s former chairperson Ali Waheed pictured in the UK where he has been living in exile since last year.
Ali Waheed resigned from his positions as the chairperson of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and deputy leader of Maldives United Opposition (MUO) on Monday.
In a letter to Former President Mohamed Nasheed, Waheed stated that he gave up his posts as he is currently in exile under political asylum of the United Kingdom. He explained that management of the party is better handed over to its members living in the Maldives than from his current position overseas.
Ali Waheed had sought political asylum in the UK last year after the state filed terrorism charges against him at the Criminal Court, accusing him of instigating conflict during a major opposition rally held on May 1 last year.
Waheed described his tenure as MDP’s chairperson as the happiest period of his political career.
MDP lauded Waheed’s determination and enthusiasm in his efforts to progress the party and the major developments he had brought about. In a statement, the party also expressed full confidence in receiving Waheed’s service in the future as well.
