The Labor Relations Authority (LRA) has confirmed that it is currently investigating 2,457 cases involving foreign workers, as part of the government’s broader efforts to address systemic issues surrounding migrant labor in the Maldives.
Speaking on a Public Service Media (PSM) program, LRA Director General Mizhathu Naeem stated that the authority, now operating under the Ministry of Homeland, is prioritizing the resolution of these cases and aims to complete investigations within the next month. She emphasized that the majority of cases concern missing foreign workers, with efforts focused on identifying causes of disappearances and ensuring regulatory compliance.
The government has simultaneously launched “Operation Kurangi,” a nationwide initiative targeting illegal foreign workers. As part of the operation, information on over 100,000 migrant workers has been collected to date. Authorities have set a deadline for all foreign workers to update their biometric information by the end of this month, warning that action will be taken against those who fail to meet the deadline.
