A suspect was rushed to the hospital on Friday night after he attempted to commit suicide while being held at a police custodial jail in Kulhudhuffushi.
In a brief media statement, the police said the suicide attempt took place at around 09:12 pm on Friday.
The police identified the suspect as a 34-year-old Maldivian male who was arrested on Wednesday for “damaging his home and creating a disturbance while under the state of influence of narcotics.”
He is being treated at the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, added the police, without elaborating.
The police said they have taken all necessary measures following the incident, and have notified the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The police added that they have also decided to send a team from Major Crime Investigations to Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the case.
“The Professional Standards Command is conducting an internal investigation into the incident as a matter of priority,” said the police.
This is not the first time for such an incident to take place in Kulhudhuffushi. In 2022, a suspect accused of beating his wife to death was found hanging in his jail at the Kulhudhuffushi Custodial and died a couple of days later at the hospital.
