His Excellency Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has commended the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, describing it as one founded on mutual trust, enduring friendship, and a shared commitment to global peace and stability.
He made these remarks at an official reception hosted by the British High Commission in Malé to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty King Charles III.
In his address, the Vice President conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to His Majesty on behalf of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He also highlighted King Charles III’s longstanding commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and the preservation of cultural heritage, noting that these values strongly resonate with the Maldives. He added that His Majesty’s leadership has fostered a sense of collective responsibility and encouraged international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.
The Vice President noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United Kingdom. He stated that the partnership, rooted in sustainable development and cultural preservation, has been further strengthened through recent high-level engagements. These include President Dr Muizzu’s visit to the United Kingdom, the President’s private audience with His Majesty the King, and the Vice President’s meeting with His Majesty at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting last year, underscoring the importance both nations attach to their bilateral relationship.
He also expressed appreciation to the UK Government for the handover of the original chairs used during the signing of the Maldives’ Independence Agreement in 1965, describing the gesture as both thoughtful and deeply symbolic.
The Vice President concluded by reaffirming the Government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Kingdom in support of shared prosperity, security, and sustainable development.
