Design phase begins for Villimalé tertiary hospital project

Survey and design work has commenced for the planned tertiary hospital in Villimalé, following the arrival of a Chinese technical team in the Maldives.
The preparatory phase comes after a letter of exchange signed between the Maldives and China in June, under which the Chinese Government is providing free assistance for the detailed design of the 100-bed hospital.
The Ministry said a project management consultancy team from the China Northeast Architectural Design and Research Institute has begun on-site work and will remain in the country until 15 January 2026. Their scope includes technical surveys and preparatory assessments required for construction planning.
Current activities focus on refining the hospital’s design framework and conducting geotechnical surveys to inform structural and engineering decisions.
The Ministry added that the work is being carried out in close coordination with local authorities and the Chinese technical team to ensure alignment with national healthcare infrastructure plans.
