Rasfannu Beach closed as breakwater restoration begins

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has initiated restoration works on the Rasfannu Beach breakwater, marking the commencement of a comprehensive effort to rehabilitate a vital piece of the capital’s coastal infrastructure.
To facilitate these essential structural reinforcements, the public waterfront was officially closed on 9 April. The reconstruction serves as the cornerstone of a broader revitalisation initiative; MTCC representatives stated that the corporation is prioritising an expedited schedule to ensure a swift completion of the maintenance phase for the residents of Malé.
This renewal carries significant weight within the current administration. Originally inaugurated in 2016, the waterfront was developed under the Ministry of Housing during the tenure of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who served as the housing minister at the time. Though envisioned as a tranquil urban sanctuary outfitted with traditional hammock chairs and specialised facilities for fishers and families, a period of inadequate institutional maintenance has since left the area’s physical assets in a state of tangible decay.
Following a presidential mandate issued in February 2025 to upgrade the site to a standard surpassing its original condition, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has leveraged a partnership between the MTCC and the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
While the MTCC manages coastal erosion and breakwater modifications to optimise water circulation, having already finalised a new drainage network, the MWSC is overseeing the construction of modernised restroom blocks, public showers, and locker facilities. Through this coordinated intervention, the government seeks to restore Rasfannu as a resilient hub for the city’s populace.
