The Prosecutor General's Office has lodged charges against Minister for Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof in relation to the MMPRC scandal.
Mahloof is one of the state officials included on a list of possible beneficiaries from the scandal, formed by the Presidential Commission on Asset Recovery.
President's Office spokesperson Mabrouq Azeez said that Mahloof had now been informed to step aside from his duties following the charges lodged against him.
Mahloof has previously said that he would resign from his post the very day that charges were brought against him in the scandal and maintained his innocence. Mahloof had earlier dismissed the list as something formed by politicians and did not mean that he was complicit or guilty.
"I will not remain at this post for even a day if I am charged," said Mahloof.
According to the Asset Recovery Commission's list, Minister Mahloof was one of the beneficiaries of the MMPRC scandal.
The list shows that Mahloof received MVR 1 million from former president Abdulla Yameen, according to statements given by former ex-President Ahmed Adeeb.
Adeeb also said that Mahloof was provided with MVR 200,000 through Mohamed Hussain (Oitte).
Oitte gave statements to the Asset Recovery Commission that he gave MVR 200,000 to Mahloof on February 26, 2014, and MVR 500,000 on March 20.
USD 33,000 received as acquisition costs were also given to Mahloof, according to the statements. The money was for US dollar exchange purposes.
The list which was made public by the parliament recently showed a number of former and current state officials, lawmakers, members of law enforcement authorities receiving pay-offs from the scandal. Many have denied their involvement in the scandal and criticized the list for implicating them baselessly and defaming them.
