President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that reclamation of Uthuru Thila Falhu will begin this year, with plans to implement a housing project there.
Speaking at the inauguration of Izzudheen Jetty last night, President Muizzu said that many projects will be implemented this year to resolve the housing issues faced by Male' residents.
As such, 200 hectares are to be reclaimed from Uthuru Thila Falhu, where a housing project will be implemented.
He further said that thousands of housing units will be established in Hulhumale', Vilimale' and Gulhi Falhu as well this year. Housing projects will also be conducted on Giraavaru Falhu and Rasmale'.
While the President has now announced housing on Uthuru Thila Falhu, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had also intended to issue land plots to Male' residents from there. However, President Muizzu had reversed this decision after coming to office and announced that instead, agricultural projects would be implemented on the island.
This agricultural project, which will be conducted in collaboration with China, has now been changed to Rasmale' [Fushidhiggarufaru].
During President Muizzu's earlier official visit to India, discussions had been held on continuing the dockyard project ongoing at Uthuru Thila Falhu. An agreement was also made to conduct agricultural projects with India as well. India raised concerns about a Chinese company remaining on Uthuru Thila Falhu to conduct projects.
The President has also decided to connect Uthuru Thila Falhu and Giraavaru Falhu with a bridge. Discussions regarding this was held with China's Asia Insfrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), with the proposal to be submitted now. The President said that the target is to begin work in 2026, and complete the project within three years.
