Council infrastructure project: Chinese delegate to arrive in July for feasibility study

The Minister of Local Governance Adam Shareef Umar on Sunday has confirmed a delegation from China is expected to arrive in July to conduct the feasibility study for the project of developing council buildings in 50 local islands.
The two governments signed the Letter of Exchange for the project earlier on May 22. The project entails the gentrification of the old council buildings across selected islands and is funded by a grant from the Chinese government.
In an interview with the state media, PSM, Shareef said they have received information that the Chinese delegation is expected to arrive for the feasibility study sometime next month.
Besides this, the current administration has revealed plans for urbanization of council infrastructure in another 55 islands for which the Maldives government contracted Malaysia’s Hextar Global Bhd earlier on January 20.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, not long after assuming office, had visited almost all of the inhabited islands in the country during which he had met with the respective council members and the public to hear their concerns. A common complaint he received during these visits was the lack of space in the council buildings.
