The Maldives Police Service has urged the public not to park vehicles on pavements in Hulhumalé, citing an increase in vehicles obstructing areas designated for pedestrians.
According to the Police, a large number of vehicles are being illegally parked on pavements on both sides of roads in Hulhumalé, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians and other road users. The practice has also disrupted the smooth flow of public transport.
The Police said action is being taken against such violations, with illegally parked vehicles currently being towed.
The Maldives Police Service reminded the public that Article 55 of the Land Transport Act prohibits driving or parking any type of vehicle on pavements and other areas designated for pedestrians.
The only exceptions under the law are baby strollers and manually operated wheelchairs used by persons with disabilities.
