Hearings end in the Presidential Launch Explosion case
The hearings in the terrorism charges against the former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor and his two bodyguards, Hassan Rikaz and Afza Ahmed Amir, following the explosion onboard the Presidential Launch “Finifenma” have concluded. At the latest hearing today, the prosecution and the defense presented their closing statements. Since the hearing was closed due to a “threat on national security”, the details of proceeding is unclear. Criminal Court did not say how the national security could be threatened by allowing journalists and the public to the hearing. An MNDF officer that gave a closed testimony at the trial said that he prepared an IED and handed it to then Vice President Adheeb as requested. The witness said that he prepared the explosive in different phases at Adheeb’s apartment at Rehendhi Flat. He said that Adheeb said that it was to be detonated on a Gulf Craft launch. The secret witness also said that Adheeb contacted him after the explosion onboard the Presidential Launch and informed him that it was his explosive that was detonated. And he said that he was told by Adheeb to stay silent and if questioned by the Police, Adheeb requested to say that the friendship between them was formed due to the firework display events. Two Police Officers also gave closed testimonies saying that Adheeb called informing that he was a good man and was not related to the Finifenma incident, indicated to the secret witness from MNDF.
