Nasheed says police trying to 'ruin' presidential polls
Speaking at a campaign rally in Male, Nasheed said no one would be able to “cheat” in the elections because MDP would deploy over 1,900 observers throughout the Maldives during the polls. However, he did admit that there were reasons for concern. “Our medicine for that is police can only go near the ballot boxes when the Elections Commission gives the go ahead. That is the practice in every country. Even the police aren’t allowed near the voting stations. The only people allowed are the voters and officials. Even SO [Special Operations] police shouldn’t be allowed to enter the voting area on their whim,” he said. The former president said the next plan to “ruin” the September 7 elections is to send policemen to “cloud” the polls under the pretext that the vote had been rigged. No policemen should be allowed to enter the voting area without the Elections Commission’s permission, he added. Nasheed also expressed confidence that MDP would win the election with around 56 to 57 percent of the votes.
