Maldives Islamist party seeks police probes to exonerate leader

Imran Abdulla faces terrorism charges for inciting violence during an opposition rally on May Day. In a letter, Adhaalath asked the police to investigate an audio clip leaked on social media attributed to judge Abdul Bari Yousuf. A voice very similar to that the Criminal Court judge looking into Imran’s case is allegedly heard giving orders to an unidentified group of people to “put something” into the protest when it heats up, the party added. Adhaalath also sought a separate investigation claiming that information had been received suggesting that a group of people were ordered to incite violence during the sunset and evening prayers in order to breakup the protest. The party also reiterated its previous comments that Imran was not responsible for the violence that occurred during the protest. Imran has been placed under house arrest until the end of his trial, which resumed in early October after a long hiatus. The prosecution had claimed that the violence which occurred during the May Day protests were the result of the “hate speeches” made by opposition leaders, including Imran. Imran was also accused of directly threatening President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during the speech. Meanwhile, Imran had requested that the judge looking into his case be changed. In separate letters, Imran requested judge Mohamed and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed to transfer his case to another judge. Judge Abdul Bari Yousuf had violated several trial procedures, he added. The Islamist leader had also sought an injunction from the High Court to put his trial on hold until a new judge is appointed. The request, however, was denied.
