The President’s Office has on Sunday appointed former deputy commissioner of police Ahmed Saudhee, who was tasked with leading the police after February’s contentious court order, as deputy minister of youth.
While Saudhee is currently a deputy minister at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, former commissioner of police Hussein Waheed is state minister at the same ministry. The date of Saudhee’s appointment is yet unclear.
After February’s contentious Supreme Court to release nine unfairly detained prisoners, the police announced that they are working to implement it. Hours after, then commissioner Ahmed Areef was replaced with deputy commissioner Saudhee.
However, three days late Saudhee was dismissed through a direct order of President Yameen, reportedly after he failed to answer multiple phone calls.
Saudhee has not been serving in any government positions since his dismissal from the police. After his dismissal, deputy commissioner Abdulla Nawaz was given temporary charge of the Maldives Police Service.
