International organizations have been raising concern regarding the sentence issued by the Criminal Court to imprison former President Mohamed Nasheed for 13 years.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, a foreign diplomat stated that the whole world is raising concern and issuing statements regarding the case because Nasheed was convicted unjustly and unfairly.
He said that the charges made against Nasheed is foolhardy and raises many questions. “Nasheed was convicted under the Act of definition of Terrorism. No operation of the army can be considered as terrorism. Did Nasheed detonate a bomb? Did he kill anyone? No he did not do any of this,” he said.
The diplomat also raised questions regarding the justness of the court proceedings. He said that keeping a person under detention is not terrorism except if no acts of terror is perpetrated during the duration of detention.
“There are distinct two very different crimes. Therefore, if Nasheed is charged with terrorism then what he is accused of should be different. This is not justice,” he said.
The diplomat also criticized the Vice President for supporting the charges raised by the Prosecutor General against Nasheed.
