Saeed consults with content creators on loan scheme

On Monday, Mohamed Saeed, the Minister of Economic Development & Trade, held a meeting with social media content creators and media professionals to solicit their opinions regarding the content creators' loan.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday said that the technical work required to launch a soft loan scheme for content creators in Maldives is nearing completion. In his X post he also mandated that soft loans for social media content creators be made available within the next fortnight.
The loan scheme aims to further expand the role of the creative economy and provide opportunities for young people to become more active in the sector, he said.
In a post on X on Monday, Saeed said he met with people who produce audio and video content on social media and work in media sales and marketing.

“We are working to conduct the program in accordance with the views of those involved in these areas,” he said.
The purpose of the loan is to provide business opportunities in such industries, he said.
There has been a huge increase in the use of social media by people of all ages in Maldives. These include those who are active on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
While the government has begun to extend loans to content creators, a number of people have been raising concerns that the current media bill in the ruling PNC-supermajority parliament, will also crack down on opinion expressed on social media.
The bill was passed in the committee stage while journalists were protesting. The government said the bill was passed after taking into account the concerns and making amendments.
In addition, the PNC has repeatedly said that it is not going to regulate social media.
