Parliament has approved the appointment of five new members of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, ensuring the continuity of the critical tax adjudication body.
The approval comes as the term of five current members is set to expire on 29 November.
The appointments followed a stringent vetting process conducted by the Parliamentary Judiciary Committee. After the President’s Office twice opened nominations and submitted a list of 14 candidates to the Parliament, 13 nominees were subsequently interviewed.
The selection adhered strictly to Parliament rules, which mandate that candidates for independent institutions or public bodies must receive a score exceeding 75 percent from the committee to be eligible for parliamentary approval. Nine of the candidates met this high approval threshold.
Following the submission of the committee's weighted report to the Parliament floor, the Parliament during Wednesday’s sitting formally endorsed five highly qualified individuals to the Tribunal, an agency established under the Taxation Act to hear tax cases.
