The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that the construction of the Islamic Centre in Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo has been fully completed, emphasizing that the centre will not be opened “in name only.”
Minister Shaheem made the remarks during the Question Time segment of the 10th sitting of the third session of the People’s Majlis for 2025, held today. The statement came in response to a question from Abdul Latheef Mohamed, Member of Parliament for Dhidhdhoo constituency, regarding the opening date of the centre and the total government expenditure on the project.
Responding to the query, Minister Shaheem confirmed that the Dhidhdhoo Islamic Centre is now complete, noting that the majority of the project’s costs were borne by the current administration.
“Apart from a small amount spent to initiate the project, all expenses were covered by this government. We are not just opening four walls — all the necessary facilities have been added,” the Minister said.
He further stated that furniture and educational resources, including chairs, tables, and equipment for the classrooms and hall, would also be provided to ensure the centre is ready for immediate use.
Highlighting the purpose of the centre, Minister Shaheem stressed that its opening would focus on Quranic learning and education.
“There will be teachers and a library, and we have already brought the necessary books from Saudi Arabia. This centre will open as a place dedicated to the Holy Quran — not in name only,” he said.
The Dhidhdhoo Islamic Centre is part of the government’s broader initiative to expand Islamic educational and community facilities across the Maldives, aimed at nurturing religious knowledge and community engagement through modern, well-equipped centres.
