President: Sri Lanka is one of Maldives’ most trustworthy friends

Sri Lanka has long been one of the Maldives’ closest and most trustworthy friends, says Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
He made the remark in a post on X on Wednesday as he conveyed well wishes on occasion of Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day.
In his post, he extended warm greetings to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya, and the government and people of Sri Lanka.
“Sri Lanka has long been one of the closest and most trustworthy friends of the Maldives. Our ties go back centuries. The Maldives always wishes all Sri Lankans enduring unity and unwavering resolve against every challenge,” he wrote.

President Muizzu also sent letters to President Disanayaka and PM Amarasuriya extending warm greetings on the occasion.
In his letter to President Disanayaka, President Muizzu noted that the celebration comes at a moment when Sri Lanka continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience in its pursuit of further economic stability, social harmony and national progress.
He highlighted the close and long-standing friendship between the two countries, strengthened by decades of cooperation and shared regional priorities.
And in his letter to PM Amarasuriya, President Muizzu acknowledged the strong history of friendship and cooperation shared by the two countries, expressing confidence that the partnership will continue to grow, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as trade, development and regional stability.
He also extended personal best wishes for the good health and wellbeing of both leaders, and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's Independence Day is observed annually on February 4 to commemorate the country's independence from British colonial rule in 1948. The theme for this year’s Independence Day is “Build Sri Lanka”.
