Nasheed did not wish to inconvenience any family member: Lawyers

Lawyers for the former President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday revealed that the former President did not wish to inconvenience any member of his family as a condition for his medical release.
In a press conference held late Sunday night, one of Nasheed’s lawyers, Hassan Latheef said that the ex-President had issued two conditions for his release to go to UK for spinal surgery.
Latheef said that the first condition was that Nasheed can remain abroad for an indeterminate time, as required by the surgery. The second condition was that none of his family members can be inconvenienced as a result of him going abroad for surgery.
He added that the Government had agreed to these conditions, confirming it with both Nasheed’s legal team and the international community.
However, his legal team said that the President had backtracked on his initial pledge, noting that this was an unethical move. He urged the President to follow the initial pledge.
Hassan Latheef added that Nasheed had signed the waiver earlier on Sunday and that it had been handed over to the Department of Corrections. However, he said that Nasheed did not wish for any of his family members to sign the waiver.
Latheef further said that Nasheed was not able to fly abroad as planned, but that they were working towards finalizing his travel plans and that hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.
