PG calls on judiciary to open all trials to public

Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has called on the judiciary to open all trials to public in its efforts to build public trust.
In a tweet, the PG highlighted the necessity of transparency in order to develop public trust in the judiciary. Hence, he called the judiciary to accommodate the public as much as space allows assuring support from the Prosecutor General's Office in making such arrangements.
Although courts currently allow public into hearings, the procedures limit the people able to attend the hearings. The most recent public trial was of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's money laundering case as part of Maldives Marketing and Public Relation Corporation's (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
