Can feel the pain of coalition govt breaking up: Nasheed

During his current campaign tour to three islands of the north of Maldives, Nasheed noted the strife between the parties of President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik's government. Nasheed speaking in Shaviyani Atoll Milandhoo last night said that the whole country was seeing the arrogance and animosity manifesting between members within the government. "As a result, the disappointing thing is, such conflict is hindering the progress and development of the people," he noted. Speaking during the rally attended by many opposition supporters, Nasheed insisted that the plight of the nation is the absence of a democratically elected leader in the country. In that regard, he accused his former deputy and current President Waheed of seizing power by brute force but later had admitted that he had no control of the government he had created. Nasheed further quoted a letter he had seen, sent by President Waheed to the international community praising the Maldivian Police, while including the part of Nasheed's allegations of an assassination plot. However, the ex-President did not go into further details of the letter. He further insisted that despite plans to assassinate him, the strings to put the move into action are not with the leaders of the present government. According to Nasheed, the country would soon see "39 MPs come in line with the thinking of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party." On that note, he hailed the resolve and efforts of the people for such results achieved by his party. The ex-President last night reaffirmed that MDP would always work towards the benefit of the Maldivian people. Police had been subject to Nasheed's criticism during his speech even last night. In that regard he had accused the Police of beating up his Special Envoy Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair, Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir and Henveiru-south constituency MP Hamid Abdul Ghafoor during the operation in Haa Dhaal Atoll Hondaidhoo, where they had been arrested for allegedly drinking alcohol on the night of November 15.
