Nasheed escorted to court for trial
President Nasheed, along with some key members of his administration face terrorism charges for the wrongful detention of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed three years ago – during his term as president. Police were escorting him into court when he suddenly stopped when faced by reports. He fell to the ground and had his shirt torn when the Special Operations officers escorting him attempted to forcefully drag him into court, despite him repeatedly saying he wanted to go in on his own. Speaking to reporters from outside Criminal Court, Attorney Hisaan Hussein – a member of President Nasheed’s legal team said that police had caused injury to President Nasheed while escorting him to court, and that the lawyers has conveyed his request for medical assistance. But that since Criminal Court had not granted the request; the issue had now been put forward to Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) by MDP. Protests around Criminal Court area got heated with allegations he was brutalized when taken into court. Though some protesters still remain in the area, police have blocked Orchid Magu where the court building is situated from Salsa Royal Café to STO Trade Center. Some protesters have even gathered near ADK Hospital amid rumours he is to be taken there for medical attention. Meanwhile, People’s Majlis Ethics Committee has started looking into case of MP Ali Azim who was arrested late Monday night near President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s residence, during the demonstrations that took place after President Nasheed’s arrest. Criminal Court has granted 10-day remand for MP Azim – who police claim tested positive for drugs.
