MDP will be a true example of an opposition party, assures PG leader
After MDP candidate lost the presidential runoff on Saturday to Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Abdulla Yamin, Solih said the people will now witness the responsible functioning of an opposition party. Unlike earlier, the people will see the difference of an effective opposition in holding the government accountable, Solih said. Solih also assured that MDP will in no way try to stymie the functioning of the government. “A fine example of a true opposition party will be seen through the parliament. We will show that a multi-party democracy can be effective in this country,” he said. He added that MDP will observe the pledges made by president Yamin to the people and hold the government accountable in a responsible manner. “Yamin was elected with a lot of pledges to the people. So he must deliver on those promises to the people. We will monitor their manifesto and push the policies included in it. It must be done within the contours of the laws,” he said. “We will definitely support and cooperate with such efforts.” Speaking during a press conference where he officially conceded defeat to Yamin, Nasheed said MDP will remain as a sincere opposition party to the state. “MDP will be a sincere political party to the state. I will be pleased if MDP can function as a sincere opposition party,” Nasheed had said.
