Government coalition member, the Jumhooree Party (JP) has announced that it may be fielding candidates for all constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
JP spokesperson Ali Solih said that the party will be accepting candidates until the 25th of January, and that the decision had been made at a party council meeting on Sunday.
JP is to select members who will receive party tickets through a five-member committee, although leader Qasim Ibrahim previously said that constituencies for which the party is to field candidates will be announced after reviewing individuals who have contested.
Thus far, the JP has maintained that it had signed an agreement with its coalition partners on dividing constituencies among them, although the Maldivian Democratic Party has denied signing any such agreement.
The Maldivian Democratic Party has announced that it will be putting forth candidates for all 87 constituencies, and is to hold a primary election in January. Government coalition partners Adhaalath Party is fielding candidates for 13 constituencies. The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives is also contesting in 42 constituencies.
The Elections Commission has scheduled the parliamentary elections for April 6th.
