Sh. Funadhoo, Rabeeuge, Abdulla Ali has received the National Award of Recognition for his commitment and dedication to volunteerism.
The awards were presented by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at an official ceremony held at Dharubaaruge last night to present this year’s National Awards.
This year’s National Award of Honor was presented to 10 recipients, and the National Award of Recognition to 22 recipients in a special ceremony at Dharubaaruge last night.
The recipients of the National Award of Honor received commemorative shields and badges, while recipients of the National Award of Recognition received commemorative plaques from the President.
Abdullah Ali has been working for the cause of the social sector, sports and humanity since he completed his studies and continues to do so. In 1990, after the completion of the school, Abdulla Ali joined Sh. Funadhoo Youth Association and later became the President of the organization.
With his experience in the Funadhoo Youth Organization, Abdulla Ali has been working since then to build youth in different parts of the Maldives under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Thus, Abdullah Ali’s full involvement in the planning and implementation of the National Youth Volunteers Programme is noteworthy.
Abdulla Ali has devoted a large part of his life to humanity and volunteerism. The most notable of these was Abdullah Ali’s participation in the efforts to support the victims of the 2004 tsunami and to establish the Red Crescent group in the Maldives after the tsunami. With the formation of the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC), Abdulla Ali represented the country’s north in two terms by being on its first governing board of MRC. During his tenure, Abdulla Ali played a key role in establishing and strengthening the branches of the Red Crescent across the country. Also, Abdulla Ali’s successful efforts at the forefront of securing the official membership of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent for MRC in a short period of time should be noted.
Moreover, Abdulla Ali has been actively involved in providing water to the general public during the Male’ Water Crisis and in consultation with the local government and some foreign organisations to find an early solution to the problem.
One of the most notable of Abdulla Ali’s contributions to the Maldivian Red Crescent was his invaluable service as the MRC’s second president. In doing so, the MRC has been able to do a number of things that have enhanced its governance and elevated the status of the Local Red Crescent in the international arena. Among them, relations with the Italian Red Cross, the Turkish Red Crescent, the Saudi Red Crescent, the China Red Crescent, the Palestine Red Crescent, and the Sri Lanka Red Crescent are included.
The fact that the Maldives became an official member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent and enjoyed the right to vote in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent organization and participated in the historic voting that the Maldives participated in is something to be remembered from Abdulla Ali’s achievements.
The recipients for National Awards were vetted and selected by the National Awards Committee.
The National Awards are conferred annually to recognise and encourage the efforts of individuals and organisations that contribute to the nation’s development and society’s benefit.
