President highlights faith, unity, and self-reliance as the foundation of national sovereignty

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that while not every citizen needs to be trained or armed, there is no cause for concern if the people wield the most powerful weapon bestowed by Almighty Allah – intellect – and align their thoughts with the interests of the nation.
The President made the remarks while addressing the nation at this year’s official Victory Day function, held to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of those who defended the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives on 3 November 1988.
Reflecting on the nation’s shared values, the President stated that Maldivians are blessed with privileges unique to their identity – belonging to the same faith, speaking the same language, and sharing the same traditions. He noted that these values cannot be destroyed by external forces, adding that the greatest threat to the nation arises when citizens prioritise personal interests over national unity. He further stressed that as long as Maldivians uphold their love for the nation, the country’s independence and sovereignty will remain safeguarded and strengthened.
In his address, the President underscored the importance of remembering the sacrifices of past generations, particularly those who defended the nation during times of peril. He remarked that the success of national policies depends on the commitment and understanding of the people and expressed confidence in the youth who have joined the National Service, including the first batch of participants present at the ceremony.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated that a nation must be built upon its own values and principles, noting that true development requires alignment between the Government’s vision and the aspirations of the people. He affirmed that his Administration remains dedicated to strengthening national infrastructure and enhancing the operational capacity of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service. He further noted that the forthcoming 2026 national budget includes provisions to improve the quality of service life within these institutions.
Calling upon all Maldivians to take pride in their duty to protect the nation’s freedom and sovereignty, the President reflected on how, in the past, nations were compelled to defend themselves through warfare. However, he cautioned that in today’s technology-driven world, independence can be undermined in new and subtle ways. He emphasised that economic self-reliance is an essential pillar of genuine freedom, noting that even a mobile phone can serve as a powerful tool through which citizens contribute to the nation’s progress and defence.
The President also underscored the importance of cherishing Islam as the nation’s greatest blessing and urged Maldivians to take pride in the teachings of the faith. He called upon the people to preserve and pass on the stories of the bravery and sacrifices of past heroes to future generations.
Concluding his address, President Dr Muizzu extended his heartfelt well-wishes to former President Uz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and to the families of the 19 martyrs who were posthumously honoured with the Shield of Honour at this year’s Victory Day function.
