A fire at the L. Gan power house has left the entire island without electricity, affecting a population of around 5,000 residents.
The blaze broke out at around 14:45 hrs on Wednesday and was extinguished by 15:50 hrs, according to police. One of the generators was damaged beyond repair, though officials believe the main engine itself was not harmed. The generator cables and the ceiling of the engine house were burnt.
Fenaka Corporation said its teams are working to restore power by midnight. Burnt objects inside the engine room have been removed, and preparations for re‑electrification are underway.
“We are targeting to reconnect power supply by midnight tonight. We believe it can be done by then,” Fenaka officials said.
Gan Council Vice‑President Ibrahim Rasheed confirmed that electricity has not been supplied to any part of the island since the fire. He added that the council has called on the public to assist Fenaka staff in cleanup efforts.
