Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, who was elected for the post on opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has begun campaigning last night as he vies for a second term in office.
Sun has learned that Azim held a meeting with his close acquaintances at Solite Restaurant last night, where he announced his intention to contest for a second mayoral term in the local council elections scheduled for next year.

During the meeting, Azim underscored that he has accomplished many achievements although it has been less than two years since he assumed the mayoral position. One such achievement he highlighted in this regard is addressing one of Male’s most persistent issues—flooding during heavy rainfall—by procuring pumps and cleaning drainage systems.
Azim, who has filled various government positions prior to this, has been observed as a highly involved and hard-working mayor. In this regard, Azim is often seen personally overseeing Male’ City Council’s works at various sites.
However, Saif Fathih, the Malé City Council Councilor for North Galolhu constituency – a member of The Democrats, which rejoined MDP after dissolving the party – has strongly criticized Azim recently over various issues.

Azim, who has previously headed some of the biggest state-owned companies, including State Trading Organization (STO) and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), won the first political election he contested to become Male’ City Mayor on January 13, 2024.
The by-election for Male’ Mayor was held after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who previously held the post, had resigned to assume presidency. The main competitor of Azim, who contested the election on MDP’s ticket, was the government’s candidate, former Attorney General Azima Shakoor.
Rumors allege that Azim, alongside other senior MDP officials, are vying to compete in next year’s local council election.
