The ‘Magey Saafu Raajje National Conference 2025’ has been officially inaugurated aimed at providing information and discussing the challenges and difficulties in sustainable waste management on a national level.
The national conference was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim at a ceremony held on Thursday. The Minister also introduced the official branding, website and social media handles of the conference.
In addition, a contract was signed during the ceremony to entrust local event management firm, ‘Event Maldives’ with the planning and organisation of the conference.
The conference is expected to involve around 500 people including all island councils, Atoll councils and City councils, as well as government institutions, state-owned companies, civil society organisations and tourism industry professionals.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq said the conference is aimed at strengthening efforts to tackle the growing waste management issues and identify possible collaborative efforts to overcome such challenges.
According to the Minister, this high priority initiative, under the special directive of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will significantly boost efforts to strengthen waste management systems across the country.
"The conference is the biggest effort to take stock of where we are and chart the way forward by working together towards achieving the President's vision for waste management in the country," he said.
Minister Thoriq said the councils will be provided with the latest information on waste management projects currently underway at both island and Atoll levels.
He said that waste management systems cannot be further strengthened unless it is based on tangible results and first hand information of ongoing and planned waste management facility development projects throughout the country.
National Waste Management Conference ‘Magey Saafu Raajje’ will be held from 20 to 23 June.
