The Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee has approved Dr Aishath Rameela as the new President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Following the expiration of Mariyam Muna’s term, Dr Aishath Rameela was appointed as an HRCM member on 3 December 2025 and nominated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to serve as the Commission’s new President, subject to parliamentary approval.
The committee unanimously approved her nomination as the Commission’s President at its meeting held on 5 January. An extraordinary session of the Parliament has now been scheduled to present the committee’s report.
A seasoned public servant, Rameela was the first Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister appointed by the current administration but resigned in December 2024 due to health reasons.
The HRCM currently comprises five members, including Vice-President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood and members Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, Ahmed Maqsoom, and Dr Rameela.
