President Announces Plans for Tourism Development Across Underserved Atolls

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding tourism through resort development across underserved atolls.
As outlined in his Manifesto and reiterated in his Presidential Address in February, the President announced on X that the government will prioritise unlocking tourism potential in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu, and Addu City.
“As I pledged in the Manifesto and as stated in my address to Parliament in February this year, we are going to unlock the tourism potential in atolls that previously did not have much resort developments. These include Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu and Addu City,” he stated.
According to the President, this initiative will be pursued through a multi-pronged approach, consisting of targeted concessions, incentives, investments in public infrastructure, and focused marketing efforts, with the objective of mobilising investment and catalysing regional economic activity.
The President noted that, alongside ongoing improvements to public transport infrastructure, the Maldives is now poised to embark on a new chapter of tourism. He revealed that further details will be announced by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in the coming week.
The government is working to further develop the Maldives’ tourism industry. Some of these efforts include further utilising the national airline for tourism purposes. In this regard, the government has started using Maldivian’s wide-body aircraft for cross-continent flights. Additionally, the government is also working to expedite the development of Velana International Airport as well as market Maldivian tourism globally through a partnership with a renowned European football club.
