The Civil Court has nullified the previous installment agreement between the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Island Aviation, operator of Maldivian Airlines, and ordered MDP to pay the remaining MVR 3.6 million within 30 days.
The ruling pertains to MVR 5.6 million owed for campaign trips during the 2023 Presidential Election. Under the original settlement, MDP was to complete payments over two years by 2027. However, after failing to meet this year’s payment schedule, Island Aviation filed a lawsuit demanding immediate full payment.
The court noted that MDP has paid MVR 2 million so far and cited MDP’s claim that delayed state funding caused the payment shortfall. Although Maldivian sought a 7-day payment order, the court allowed 30 days, considering the pending state funds.
Island Aviation rejected MDP’s request for further delay, prompting the court to cancel the prior installment agreement and mandate payment of the outstanding amount within 30 days.
The original agreement had included a clause that non-payment would result in nullification, which the court upheld in its decision.
