Those who contest independently after losing primaries are disloyal: Nasheed

Those who decide to run in the Parliamentary Elections as independent candidates, even after losing the primary elections held by main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), are the most disloyal to the party, says former President and party leader Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking to residents of south-Henveiru ward in capital city Malé on Saturday, Nasheed said that it is important for the main ruling party to win the constituencies representing the capital city.
Stating that it is important to elect MDP candidate for south-Henveiru constituency Hussain to the seat, Nasheed urged all residents to cast their votes for him and not the candidate contesting independently, adding that the most important thing for the system right now is loyalty.
“MDP held primary elections. Hussain won the primary. It is of utmost importance to vote for Hussain. If a person leaves the party to contest independently, that is deceit in its true form” said the coalition leader.
The former President’s statement comes at a time Mohamed Abdul Kareem, who lost the party primaries on 18th of January, left the party after losing and later revealed that he might be contesting independently.
Supreme Court has since declared that candidates who lose party primaries will be allowed to contest as independent candidates.
