FIFA approves Maldives FA talks with govt to resolve Charter dispute

In a bid to avoid a FIFA suspension, Football Association of Maldives (FAM) said Wednesday they are in discussion with the home ministry on proceedings concerning the FAM Congress, which was called off due to lack of governmental cooperation. FAM ’s electoral congress scheduled for last week was cancelled after the Home Ministry’s refusal to register FAM’s new charter over unresolved issues. AFC had issued a warning that the Maldives may face a FIFA suspension should governmental influence put off the elections. The association’s General Secretary Bassam Adeel Jaleel told Haveeru on Wednesday that the Home Ministry has proposed including certain Clauses of the Associations Act in FAM’s new charter. However, that would be possible only after holding their congress, declared Bassam. “So, we requested them to conditionally approve the charter. That would enable us to hold the congress and add those clauses afterwards,” he said. He added that should the ministry approve the charter even now, FAM is prepared to hold the congress next week along with the charter amendments. Bassam also stated that FIFA approves of their discussions with the Home Ministry and will provide the necessary time to amend their charter. “However, FIFA says they will only provide the time upon receiving the ministry’s cooperation in holding the congress in writing. We’re working towards that now. The association registries are also very positive.”
