Maldivian Delegation، lead by Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon، addressed the international media yesterday in Sri Lanka to brief on the trial and verdict issued by the Criminal Court on former President and opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed.
Foreign Ministry’s website stated the Maldivian delegation in Sri Lanka met with international media at the Maldives High Commission in Colombo on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters Minister Dunya said that the trial was conducted in a free and fair manner and the trial was a testament to the “strength of Maldivian democracy”،
“The trial was conducted in accordance with the relevant laws and criminal procedures prevailing in the Maldives، [and] the former President was accorded all his Constitutional rights fully”. Minister Dunya said addressing to international media.
She reiterated that ‘no man is above the law’.
The Maldives Delegation also assured to the media that the former President would be treated with respect and dignity while in state custody.
The Foreign Minister was leading the Maldives Delegation of the Government، which also included the Attorney General Mohamed Anil and the Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adeeb.
In addition، the delegation also met with the Chargé d’ Affaires at U.S. Embassy in Colombo، Andre C. Mann.
During the meeting Minister Dunya briefed the Chargé ď Affairs on the current political situation in the Maldives and assured the Government’s commitment in upholding the constitutional rights، rule of law and separation of powers.
Minister Dunya and Mr. Mann also discussed the excellent relations between the two countries and highlighted on ways of further enhancing the close bilateral cooperation between Maldives and U.S.
