Sentencing hearing in the case against Adheeb boarding the Presidential Launch to plant IED to be held tomorrow
The sentencing hearing in the case against the former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb for allegedly boarding the Presidential Launch “Finifenma” to plant an IED has been scheduled for tomorrow. The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow. The explosion onboard the Presidential Launch on September 28, 2015 as it was docking at the Izzuddeen Jetty in Malé City after the President’s return from Saudi Arabia left the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom unhurt, but resulted in injuries of some others including the First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim. The state has accused the former Vice President of planting an IED onboard the Presidential Launch during his visit to Aarah on 27 September 2015. Some of the witnesses from the prosecution testified that Adheeb and his two bodyguards were alone in the Saloon area of the launch. Former Vice President Adheeb was charged with misuse of official authority in the case. After the defense failed to provide any defense witnesses in the one hour they were given, Judge Abdul Baree Yousuf, presiding over the case, decided to proceed without the testimonies of any defense witnesses. Adheeb have said that when the defence called the witnesses in the one hour given by the court, they had their phones switched off. And so the defense requested another opportunity to provide witnesses but the Judge refused.
