Minister of State reiterates Maldives’s support for the Island Proposal to amend the Montreal Protocol

Speaking at the High-Level Segment of the 27th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, Minister of State for Environment and Energy Mr Abdullahi Majeed called upon the Protocol and Parties to support for the ‘Islands Proposal’ to amend the Montreal Protocol to integrate HFC management under the Protocol. In this regard, the Minister of State welcomed the recent progress made regarding the establishment of a contact group on the feasibility and ways of managing HFC under Montreal Protocol.
Minister of State furthermore noted the attention towards the difficulties in the fisheries sector in switching to HCFC free low GWP alternatives. In this regard, the Minister of State reiterated the concerns of the Maldives as a small island developing state regarding the increase of HFC as a result of phasing out HCFCs.
The 27th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol is being held at Dubai, United Arab Emirates from the 1st to 5th November 2015.
