His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability in shaping the nation's future.
In a message marking International Anti-Corruption Day, he described the Maldives' accession to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2007 as a solemn obligation, stressing that the country remains determined to uphold the Convention's principles with transparency and resolve.
The President noted that systemic corruption endangers the rule of law, obstructs sustainable development, weakens democratic governance, and undermines citizens' fundamental rights. He emphasised that the Administration maintains zero tolerance towards corruption and is committed to eliminating this threat.
He outlined key initiatives underway, including the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation initiative to modernise public service delivery, reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, and ensure transparency in every Government transaction. He also highlighted the Anti-Corruption Commission's critical work in asset recovery through the development of a model law and amendments to key legislation such as the Penal Code. Furthermore, he emphasised preventive efforts undertaken by this Administration, including the 20-year National Development Plan aligned with the National Anti-Corruption Plan, the 'Himmi' Corruption Risk Self-Assessment Toolkit for public institutions and State-Owned Enterprises, and the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Corruption Academy to ensure institutions across the country are equipped with well-trained professionals committed to integrity and good governance.
The President acknowledged the contributions of civil society organisations and the UNCAC review mechanisms in strengthening both social accountability and international cooperation. However, he stressed that active government action alone is not enough—participation from every citizen and the private sector is essential to combating corruption. He added that the nation's youth inspire confidence in the future being built.
President Dr Muizzu concluded his message by reaffirming the nation's shared responsibility to speak out, remain vigilant, and uphold honesty and transparency. He reiterated the Administration's commitment to building a country where integrity flourishes, democratic governance is strengthened, the rule of law prevails, and the justice system remains fair and impartial.
International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on 9 December, marking the adoption of UNCAC by the UN General Assembly in 2003.
