A new temporary parking facility capable of holding over 1,200 vehicles was officially opened to the public in Hulhumale’ Phase 2 on Sunday, offering a much-needed solution for vehicles in the greater Male' region.
Developed jointly by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the new zone is located adjacent to the Cat Shelter and was inaugurated at a special ceremony graced by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ameen highlighted the chronic issue of vehicles being parked on streets and in public spaces due to a lack of designated parking areas. He expressed optimism that this new zone would offer some respite to the issue and reduce road congestion, provided the public utilises the designated spaces, emphasising that this is temporary fix.
HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair echoed the Minister's sentiments, underscoring the importance of providing immediate parking relief. He confirmed that this temporary zone is part of a larger, more permanent strategy currently in progress.
"There are already parking buildings being constructed in collaboration with the Ministry and HDC," Zuhair said.
According to the Ministry, the new facility offers a legal and regulated parking space exclusively for four-wheeled vehicles, bringing the total number of parking spaces provided by the Ministry across Hulhumale’ to 2,500.
