A policewoman has been arrested with drugs in a counter-narcotics operation conducted by the police in Male’ City.
According to the police, two people were arrested on Friday morning from near the Masjid Al-Sultan Muhammad Bin Abdullah, commonly known as the Viyafaariveringe Mosque.
The suspects arrested in the case were identified as:
Aishath Shiyaza, 31, Dhilbahaaruge, ADh. Kunburudhoo
Saifulla Ahmed, 26, Hazaarumaage, HA. Dhidhdhoo
The police confirmed that Shiyaza is a police officer.
The duo was arrested in a joint operation by Drug Enforcement and Police Intelligence. During a search of their person, the police seized three rubber packets containing drugs and a restricted medicine pill.
When presented before the Criminal Court for their remand hearing, Shiyaza was remanded in custody of police for five days while Saifulla was remanded in custody for 10 days.
The case is under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Department.
Drug addiction is the biggest social issue facing the Maldives. The police received reports of 1,673 drug-related cases last year, and 1,010 such cases so far this year.
