The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has launched a comprehensive nationwide awareness programme across the provinces, aimed at strengthening the democratic environment ahead of next year's local council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections.
This vital initiative, spanning 36 islands across 12 atolls, is designed to inform citizens about the democratic system, their foundational rights, responsibilities of those involved in governance, and the intricacies of the electoral process.
The programme, scheduled to run from 28 November to 2 December, will feature sessions tailored for diverse demographics, including eligible voters of all ages and dedicated workshops specifically targeting youth. To ensure a holistic educational experience, the ECM is collaborating with key national institutions, including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Islamic University of Maldives and the Maldives Learning Centre in Fuvahmulah City.
These crucial awareness efforts precede the upcoming local council and WDC elections, which are scheduled to be held in March. The candidacy period for prospective candidates is set to open in January. Through this concerted provincial outreach, the ECM aims to foster a more informed and engaged electorate, solidifying the democratic foundations of the island nation.
