Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the ongoing protests in Noonu atoll Holhudhoo following the unresolved case of Zakiyya Moosa’s death who was found dead in her home last year with injuries of varying severity.
According to police, the arrests were made for attacking a police officer and damaging the local police station. The suspects are currently under investigation, police said.
Tensions in Holhudhoo escalated after a large protest was held last Monday, demanding justice for Zakiyya. Prior to the demonstration, some residents attempted to enter the police station, and the protest continued late into the night.
Many residents believe Zakiyya’s husband was responsible for her death and have been calling for his arrest. However, authorities have not detained any suspects in connection with the case. The police later stated that Zakiyya’s death was likely a suicide.
In response to public outrage, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan and Police Commissioner Ali Shujau visited Holhudhoo to meet with residents.
Minister Ihusan admitted that it was a mistake for the police to bury Zakiyya without conducting an autopsy.
