Pres. Muizzu calls for renewed regional cooperation among SAARC nations

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Tuesday, has called for renewed regional cooperation among South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries.
He made the call in a message to the Secretary-General of SAARC, on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the SAARC Charter.
In his message, the President emphasized the urgent need to revitalize the Association by restoring trust and convening the SAARC Summit. He highlighted that dialogue, unity, and cooperation are the only effective means to unlock South Asia’s full potential and enhance the wellbeing of its people.
President Muizzu stressed that expanded collaboration is crucial for addressing global and regional challenges, including climate change, renewable energy promotion, stronger public health systems, food security, reducing inequality, and fostering inclusive economic growth. He added that a more robust SAARC institutional structure would allow the region to tackle these issues more efficiently and better serve its citizens.
Closing his remarks, the President reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong and enduring dedication to a more cohesive, comprehensive, and future-focused SAARC—one that prioritizes collective interests, upholds shared principles, and makes a meaningful contribution to lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
SAARC Charter Day is observed annually on December 8th, marking the signing of the SAARC Charter in 1985 by the Leaders of SAARC Countries at the First SAARC Summit held in Dhaka.
